What’s up with all the boy/girl robot duos that (as of last night) have begun to invade Southern California? It’s strange because I’m not usually a fan of this crap, but I think I hear a new one every day, and not one of them has been bad. I can’t help but think that my judgement is impaired, or this music is really easy to make. Regardless, they are spouting up innumerably and will continue to do so all summer long. The invasion was kicked off last night at the Detroit Bar by Crystal Castles. Whys it so hip, all of a sudden, for short, relatively decent looking dudes to team up with super hot chicks who can kinda sing, and make fake music under typically strange monikers? It’s such a weird fad, and it’s probably gonna die in like four seconds. Hope the dudes who made the ‘Hipster Olympics‘ videos are on point.
You’ve seen that, though, so watch this instead:
That’s ‘The Royal Family’ by Free Blood, who are also on the hip-couple beat making bandwagontrain bound for the Southwest. They are Brooklynites Madeline and John, and are currently touring with Hot Chip. If you act quickly (and aren’t going to Coachella) you may still be able to score tickets to see both bands on May 28th at the Mayan. Here’s the ticketmaster link. Shit costs 23 bucks.
If you’re not going to Coachella then screw the Mayan because their website will blow up your computer. Instead, get some Free Blood with No Age and Yeasayer at the Ukrainian Cultural Center on the 25th.
Bottom line: I can pretty much guarantee that you won’t remember this band in 20 years, but you owe it to yourself to admit that you don’t care how vacant and stupid this trend is, because they are still kinda fun. Not everything has to be so serious all the time, right?

I liked the free blood stuff Ive heard. Im interested in seeing them live before i write them off as another electro-duo. I think the whole band wagon trend is really getting old

[...] never expect anything new to be even borderline decent, so when c4 threw up that Free Blood post and included a track from Yeasayer on the end, I didn’t expect to dig it as much as I did. [...]
